I know. I know. I just talked about seasonal foods a few days ago, but those were inspired by a current holiday. This post is focusing on a treat I enjoyed back in December and photographed at the time for later. I always love Egg Nog but only buy it once a year and this is usually between Christmas and New Year when the grocery store wants to “liquidate” (see what I did there?) the rest of their holiday stock before it spoils.
Of these two, the Prairie Farms Egg Nog was definitely the best (I would have thought Southern Comfort would be the best given the traditional recipe for Egg Nog), but my all time favorite Egg Nog type drink was Silk Soy Nog. One year our local Hyvee had stacks of this stuff on the discount rack in the dairy for .10 a quart.
We were still using the big refrigerator at the time, and we must have bought 20 or so containers and actually drank it all before it spoiled. My husband – the lucky devil – manages to splurge for a week or two sometimes without gaining over a couple of pounds that he can easily lose, so he covered the bulk of it, but I also had my fair share and was delighted. There was also some Silk Pumpkin Spice milk for sale that year that was very good, and each of these products had enough spice about them that they didn’t really need any Nutmeg to add a tang to the beverage. If you have an opportunity to grab these products at a bargain (I would pay up to $2.00 per once in a season), then you should definitely check them out, particularly if you like Egg Nog but prefer alternative dairy products.
