I had acne as a teenager, but after I got into my early twenties and began to eat healthier and exercise, it cleared up and my skin looked pretty good for a few years. Then, things changed. I developed cystic acne along my jawline and on the upper reaches of my neck. I tried numerous things in the hopes of clearing it up and spent a lot of time and money trying to conceal it – all to no avail.
This went on for 2.5 years, and for all of that time, I was trying products and trying to figure out what in my life had changed for this plague to have been brought down upon me. The only thing I could ever really figure out was that a new water softener was installed in the apartment we rent and that it seemed to make the water salty enough to take out two new coffee pots (via clogging) in quick succession. We started filtering the water for coffee but couldn’t see our way to spending the money on expensive in-shower filters when we would likely have to replace it every couple of months. Besides, we didn’t feel like “softened water” could be doing that much to our bodies from the outside.
Fast forward to last November – a day that I purchased a Vicks Humidifier to keep the air in our apartment more moist so my husband’s skin wouldn’t dry out this winter. A few days after we plugged in the humidifier I noticed that my face felt smoother than it had in a long time – and this wasn’t the raw smoothness after a peel – it was just nice and soft. About a week later, I noticed that I didn’t have any new acne on my jaw. A little while after that and my current acne had cleared up.
Now, a little over two months later. I have only had a few pimples and those were usually related to my cycle. I look at my neck and jaw in the mirror now, and I can still see redness and other traces of the cystic acne that was…but it is only traces…nothing new.
As soon as I noticed my face was looking better, I embraced it and quit using my scrubs and creams to avoid jinxing a good thing. I feel like the humidifier will end up paying for itself with the savings I now have from not needing products, products, products. I still can’t quite believe that a little device pumping water in the air would do so much good for me, but it has.
I feel like it really goes to show that sometimes the best solutions are the simplest ones. This entire experience has really made me contemplate incorporating more natural products and solutions into my life which is one of the reasons I am so excited to have this blog with Amanda and find out all of her secrets for living a healthier life without a chemical cocktail product greeting me behind every door.
I’ve seen what one little tweak has done for me, and I look forward to seeing what more will do.
